Untreated Bindii results in the nasty prickle underfoot.GRASS WEEDS INCLUDING CRABGRASS AND WINTERGRASSWe apply a Pre-Emergent spray to eliminate the vigorous competition and very untidy appearance of these weeds, products are applied at the right time to prevent them germinating at all.NUTGRASS (ALSO KNOWN AS MULLUMBIMBY COUCH) CONTROLTo eliminate Nutgrass the strategy has been to match persistence of the weed with repeated treatments in Spring and Summer, often for some years. Nutgrass compromises the appearance of lawns, but most people have ducked the problem in the past as the cost of repeated special purpose visits to control it is high. Advances in product and treatment technology now see Nutgrass as a successfully treated sedge style weed. However, treatment timing and application are of utmost importance. Post-Emergent spraying is the most effective with two applications.
VERTIMOWING

VERTIMOWING / DETHATCHINGThick, spongy lawns (especially couch varieties) respond well to a Spring ‘clean-up’ via vertimowing/dethatching. Vertimowing cuts vertically into the grass thatch layer which removing large amounts of thatch and water repellent organic matter that accumulates as grass grows.Your lawn will at first appear decimated, yellow and even bald after a vertimow. It will quickly recover with a new generation of grass shoots through the surface, bouncing back with renewed vigour, colour and performance, especially through the warmest months.If you think you’ve got a thatch issue and you’re either struggling with mow quality (scalping) or struggling getting water to travel through that thatch/decaying organic matter layer, then yes vertimowing is the solution. But before you do – be careful and consider the following.Is the lawn species suitable for vertimowing? Buffalo lawns as a rule just don’t respond well to heavy/deep vertimowing renovations. Couch grasses in general respond well to almost ground level vertimowing.IS VERTIMOWING THE CURE?Some people regard vertimowing as a cure for a sparse, failed lawn surface. Remember you only vertimow a surface that has been extremely successful and has actually grown on itself for a number of years, causing the spongy, thatchy repellent layer of both Rhizome and Stolon activity. Be sure to check root strength/viability and check rhizome activity just beneath the surface.WHAT ABOUT THE REMOVAL OF DEBRIS?The verticutter performance and the depth setting is vital, but so is the debris removal, ideally raking it all up isn’t really practical, especially if you are removing 100m2 or more. Quality rotary mowers with wing tip blades and efficient catchers will offer good vacuum/suction of debris, but to ideally finish off the surface you need a vacuum to remove the last of it, before settling the surface back down. The amount of refuse that is removed is extraordinary make sure you have a way of removing, covering and transporting to the tip- or get a skip bin.FOLLOW UP MOWINGYou can’t just leave the surface for a month or two, remember it will need mowing 15-20 days later to establish new sward height and uniformity amongst the new surface. Establish a consistent mowing routine to compliment the capital outlay and effort. Mowing demands will differ slightly with time of year of the job being done.NUTRIENT STRATEGYDon’t plaster the surface with cheap, fast release nutrient sources (especially Nitrogen), or you will be back in the same boat in a year or two and will need to do it all again. Slow release nutrition incorporating trace elements will hold the surface from once again getting “fat”.

FERTILISINGRegular fertilising is vital providing year round nutrition which will drive growth and vigour in your lawn. Increasing your lawn’s strength and resilience is a key to resisting weed, fungus and insect invasion.FOLIAR FERTILISATIONSlow release liquid fertilisers have proven to give more even, sustained feeding, more vigour and a more uniform feeding pattern than the traditional granular hand spread method.We apply foliar (liquid) fertilisers via a boom spray mist using a “hit and stick method” that enables the product to enter through the grass leaf pores, rather than the dissolved granular product being absorbed by grass roots as it travels through the soil/rootzone. There is no run-off, no waste via soil nutrient lock up, no leaching away in our sandy soils. The applied foliar nutrient will travel into the plant, readily used as the plant requires it. Products are applied with a water-proofer which guarantees the product sticking to the grass plant, protecting from any rainfall in Winter months or the reticulation watering during Summer. We alter the type of product’s applied throughout the different seasons, ensuring the lawn’s nutrient requirements are optimised for the specific time of year.GRANULAR FERTILISATIONMow hoe n blow uses premium polymer coated slow release granular fertilisers aimed at sustained feeding over a period of at least 8 weeks. These products are used in watering season to be readily watered off grass leaves and into root zone via reticulation systems. The polymer coated fertilisers prove to be the most stable in releasing nutrients over an extended period of time, they won’t spot with a heavy dew before water, as do the Sulphur coated fertilisers. The finer prill (granule) size means less of the product being mown off as it sits amongst the turf sward, not on top of it only to be cut off by mowing. These products promote year-round uniformity, eliminating growth spikes and ’scalping’ from excessive mowing.

WETTING AGENT APPLICATIONWetting agents are vital to ensure that the precious water you apply soaks into soil/rootzone and is available for root uptake allowing proper transpiration for the grass plant.Untreated lawns develop pale, dry patches because most of the applied water is lost to either run off or evaporation before it can penetrate your lawn. Lawns can end up with shallow root penetration which can cause leaf canopy to burn during extended periods of hot weather.When an adequate amount of reticulation water is applied to a lawn treated with wetting agents, it will remain uniformly hydrated, retaining moisture deeper within the soil profile and assists “drought proofing” your lawn.Application of wetting agent should be carried out 2-3 times per watering season. A sound strategy is to get your 1st application down early in the watering season (late Oct) long before the Winter moisture is gone from your soil profile. TOP DRESSINGTop dressing is an underestimated renovation process, often overlooked or misunderstood in terms of its importance.Top dressing provides a growth and recovery media to assist new shoots to fire away into previously bare areas. This provides lateral spread and recovery in worn high traffic areas.At Mow How N Blow we understand the importance of matching sand profiles to individual sites to avoid layering and infiltration inconsistencies. We understand the time of year most practical and the depths required to achieve a result.Often a prospective client will expect that top dressing will fix/fill deep holes, pockets and swales in their lawn surface. We cannot apply a top dressing at a depth of any more than 15-20mm maximum. The top dressed lawn leaf surface has got to be able to penetrate the top dressing sand within the week. The lack of light/photosynthetic activity for any longer than 5-7 days will result in a bigger problem than you started with.You need at least 2 weeks of little or no traffic in a newly top dressed surface. Foot traffic will disturb the carefully finished surface creating new high and low sections, also acting like sandpaper and actually rubbing away new shoots and recovery points.
